Director - Field Sales & Projects Iowa Interstate Railroad Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Presentation Description: As wind turbine components continue to grow, the wind energy industry faces more and more challenges to transport components from factories and ports to wind farm sites. I will demonstrate why OEMs and turbine designers need to consider transportation constraints in their designs. Additionally, I will focus on the use of rail transportation, the cleanest form of transportation in North America, which can be the primary long haul mode of transportation for wind farms greater than 25 turbines. I will provide examples and general guidelines for not just component size, but proper methods of safe transportation that are outlined by the Association of American Railroads. I will show that by solving for tomorrows logistics challenges today, OEMs can continue to sell their turbines, maximize their carbon reduction through rail transport, and reduce their cost and risk exposure.
